JAMES McGAIRY

James Duncan McGairy was born in 1967 and grew up in High Wycombe.  He graduated with an Honours Degree from Sunderland Polytechnic in 1989.

Having won the commission to illustrate the 1992 Langbaurgh Calendar the artist embarked upon his career.  Since 1990, James has illustrated several calendars and Christmas cards for clients including ICI and the Sunderland Echo.  Limited Edition prints have also been published.

The artist has regularly exhibited around the North East of England.  At the 1993 Autumn Exhibition of the British Society of Painters, James was highly commended and won an award as the most outstanding young watercolourist.

James paints mainly landscapes capturing the atmosphere and feeling of his subjects.  He has a particular affinity with Northern landscape, reflected in his paintings of the Moors and Dales.

A favoured subject that recurs time after time is water, whether a tumbling beck, a  majestic river or a transient puddle.  Says James, “water is the stuff of life and I hope it adds a touch of life to my paintings.  I am perhaps one of the few people who have benefited from recent wet summers”.
